(Running, Riding and Registered Project Bike)
This original and rare early 1941 WD Matchless G3L was supplied to the War Office under contract C/S11462 dated 1th September 1941. There were just 500 motorcycles supplied under this contract, which makes it one of the smallest war time contracts. Very little information exists for where these early bikes were destined but the following 2 contracts were supplied to the RAF, so this is a possibility. However, we do know that many of the 1941 bikes went to the Airborne Forces. The bike runs and rides well and comes with a current V5C, registration XXS 453. It is registered as a historic vehicle and is therefore free road tax and MOT exempt. The number is non-transferable.
These early G3L’s had a number of differences in their specification to make them as light as possible and very few genuine examples have survived. This means that they are sort after by Airborne Forces and Military Re-enactors. This bike has the early rear frame, drilled rear sprocket, petrol tank with metal M badges, ribbed rear mudguard (the front has been replaced), and low number gearbox. In addition, it is fitted with a reconditioned dynamo, new rear chain, primary chain case band and rubber handlebar grips and footrests (which are correct for early bikes). We believe also the magneto may have been rebuilt by a previous owner. Prior to starting the engine, we drained and flushed the oil tank and also fitted a different Amal 276 carburettor. The bike is not currently fitted with a speedometer. We have not cosmetically restored the bike deciding to leave it to the next owner to make the decision of whether to fully restore it. Therefore, the price we are asking for the bike reflects its current condition.
