This original WD Matchless G3L was supplied to the War Office under contract S.4555 dated 20rd September 1943.  They were delivered at 1300 per month and given that it was made in 1943 it is highly likely that it would have seen action in Normandy.  The original army registration number or “C” number that would have been painted on the petrol tank was C 5804073. When purchased by the previous owner the fuel tank displayed original Divisional markings of the 3rd RTR. (Royal Tank Regiment), however, he chose to paint it in the colours of 10 RTR, which I am told was the phantom Army in south-east England which took part in Operation Fortitude.

The bike comes with a current V5C, registration DAS 757 and is registered as a Historic Vehicle and is therefore free road tax and MOT exempt.  The V5C records that there were 1 former keeper and that the number is non-transferable.

This bike is an older restoration and whilst it is a genuine bike which has always been maintained to a high standard.  However, it benefits from a recent top end decoke, 2 brand new tyres and brake shoes, recent oil change and the dynamo and magneto were professionally overhauled in  March 2019.  . It retained many of its War time features including its 41/G3L engine from an earlier contract, original WD speedometer and T position lighting switch and canvas grips.  The rear carrier, pannier racks and bags are not period and there is a period fire extinguisher and army water bottle fitted.  There are 2 toolboxes fitted and one of them has a brass plaque stating it was last overhauled to Class 1 condition by the army in February 1955.The bike was previously owned by a good friend of ours who took it to Normandy each year from 2001 to 2019.  It has not been on the front line for some years but has some battle scars and as such the paint is tatty and in places it has been touched up.

We have given this bike a thorough service including fitting a new battery.  We have cleaned the magneto and reset the points, cleaned the carburettor and adjusted the tappets.
